Students

House under constructionThe Bridges Construction & Renovation program prepares juniors and seniors for employment, future education, and career pathways in architecture, construction, engineering and the military.

Upon completion of the one-year Bridges program, students are prepared for an apprenticeship or additional educational opportunities at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) and in-demand careers with high earning potential.

Beyond skills building, the program provides an opportunity for students to make a positive impact on their community by building and renovating safe, affordable housing.

The Program:

Students attend class at West High School for approximately two days per week and work on-site for three hours a day for three days per week.

Students earn three high school elective credits.

Students earn seven credits from NWTC in the areas of introduction to carpentry; floor, roof, and ceiling framing systems; and exterior building finishes.

FOR THE 2018-19 SCHOOL YEAR ONLY:

When students registered for the Bridges Construction & Renovation program for 2018-19, it was with the understanding they would earn seven college credits upon completion of the course. As new instructor Mr. Frerk begins his teaching career, his first year will include focusing on obtaining credentials to teach college courses. The change for Bridges Construction & Renovation students this school year is as follows: students will earn one college credit from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC), and one high school credit for the successful completion of the Introduction to Carpentry course during the 2018-2019 year. Bridges students may wish to continue on a career pathway in carpentry, and the NWTC Carpentry program is the next step. Bridges students will earn a scholarship to pay for the cost of tuition for an additional six credits in the NWTC Carpentry program. To earn this scholarship, students must enroll in the NWTC Carpentry program within one year of high school graduation. Mr. Frerk will provide students with more information about collecting the scholarship.
